Approximately twenty schools among current industrial high-schools in the nation are supposed to open as Korean meister schools in 2010.
Meister high school is planning to cultivate meister (the German word for “master”, craftsmen and technical expertise) and is scheduled to open in March 2010. In case the graduates of the high school gain employment, they are able to postpone their military duty up to four years. (Korean male has a duty to do a military service for two years) When they join an army, the opportunity to work as specialists that can apply their skills will be given.
The principals of meister high school will be appointed through the nation-wide recruitment process while concerning industrial experts will be invited as faculty members. Greater amount of independence such as curriculum management is guaranteed. Also, all the students are free from school fee and scholarship is planning to be given to low income brackets’ children and excellent students.
The minister of education, science and technology is willing to choose up to 20 schools as meister schools after deliberating each school’s plan by establishing a governmental- industrial council of deliberation. Each chosen school will be supported by 2.5 billion won for establishing its foundations.
