Regarding 2010 government budget which freezes education spending and teacher salary, KFTA expressed concerns over a weakening of the public education.
In 2010 education budget, the total budget for Education Ministry increased by 2% to 46.1348 trillion won while local education budget is reduced by 824.8 billion won from this year implying a deterioration in local education.
KFTA said the deterioration of local budget balance will have negative impacts on school operation and therefore measures to provide quality learning environment for students are urgent.
In addition, KFTA said the government policy to maintain the freeze on teacher and government employee salaries may lead to a reduced moral of teachers.
Noting that advancement in public education is hard to expect without proper investments, KFTA stressed the importance of investment in education including local education budget increase. It also urged the government to reconsider the freeze on teacher salary. KFTA plans to actively persuade political parties and politicians to influence National Assembly deliberation.
