In Korea, every May 15th is celebrated as ‘Teachers’ Day’. The KFTA held ‘Commemoration Ceremony for Teachers’ Day and Educational Meritorious Teachers’ in the Kim Koo Museum & Library with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Youth Organizations, and Parents Organizations on May 15th and honored 3,767 teachers.
The government and teachers’ organization have held a ‘Teachers’ Day Ceremony’ separately from 1998 to last year and this was the first time since then to host ceremony together. In the ceremony, about 500 people including Mr. Youn Jong-Gun (President of the KFTA), Ms. Han Myung-Sook (Prime Minister), Mr. Hwang Woo-Yeo (Chairman of Educational Committee of National Assembly), Mr. Kim Jin-Pyo (Minister of Education and Human Resources), representatives of each political party and education related personnel, awardees, their families and students participated.
Mr. Youn showed his concern through commemorative address, “Every Teachers’ Day, teachers’ authority and education society are attacked because the media focus public attention on educational problems like delivering bribes to teachers rather than brightening the true meaning of Teachers’ Day.” He requested to the public that educators, students, parents, governments, media and society should make an effort to make Teachers’ Day a festival to raise national attention.
