| <KFTA President, Mr. Youn Holds a Press Conference Related with Teachers’ Authority Infringement>
Korean education society was shocked that a female elementary school teacher knelt down before parents to make an apology on May 18th.
Parents argued, “The teacher forces students to eat lunch quickly and students suffer from indigestion. When students cannot finish lunch quickly, they should write a self-examination and sometimes teacher punishes students.” Parents visited the teacher’s house to make a protest on May 17th.
The teacher said, “There could be methodical problem in my pedagogy, but I did nothing wrong to students as an educator. I knelt down to parents because I did not want this accident to be bigger.”
Related with this accident, the KFTA president, Mr. Youn Jong-Gun had a press conference at Seoul Metropolitan Educational Office on May 22nd. In the conference, he said, “Even though the parents delivered an apology to the school, we should not let this accident just pass by. This can be a fresh start to establish teachers’ authority and to raise understanding about the authority of teachers. The government should examine this accident closely about why and how this shameful occasion happened and develop a proper solution for this. The government must make a practical plan to raise teachers’ authority instead of nominal regulation or hollow policies about the authority of teachers.” He proposed to enact ‘Act on Educating Students and Protecting Teachers’ Authority (tentatively named)’.
Mr. Youn added that we need quick improvement in the school meals program which provoked this accident and asked the media to prudently approach educational issues.
