| KFTA issued a pamphlet titled 'How to address infringement of educational authority' last April 14 by the help of the Seoul School Safety and Insurance Association. According to this pamphlet, as many as 41,114 cases of school safety accidents were covered last year which cost some 17 billion won. The number of school safety accidents has been on the increase every year and the number will be even higher if it includes unreported accidents.
Most of the accidents occurred during a recess (40.8%) followed by physical education (33.8%) and after-school program (7.9%). Such accidents were mostly caused by careless behavior of students (78.9%) and chronic disease (20.9%). Some 44% of the accidents occurred at the elementary school and kindergarten. In case of high school, students tended to get into more accidents as they move to a higher grade since more compensation money were guaranteed.
Lee Sun-young, director of KFTA Educational Authority Department emphasized that all the parties including students, parents, teachers, schools and educational administration should work together to boost awareness of school safety and reduce school accidents.
KFTA and the Seoul School Safety and Insurance Association urged teachers to ▲carry out accident prevention education on a regular basis, ▲continue to address violence or bullying at school, ▲make sure that school facilities are regularly monitor and ▲pay special attention to students.
